Waking Up

The days have grown shorter and colder. Every morning I wake up before the sun — and it is usually a struggle. I press snooze, roll over, and delay getting out of bed. I can’t count how many morning I wake up late and end up missing the gym or putting off work I had planned on doing.

I’ve struggled with this since I was a teenager.

The morning provides a great opportunity to read and learn, write and reflect, and prepare for the day. But too often I squander it by laying in bed. I can’t count how many Saturdays I’ve squandered laying in bed and watching Netflix.

Lately I’ve kept a quote next to my bed:

Yes, you can–if you do everything as if it were the last thing you were doing in your life, and stop being aimless, stop letting your emotions override what your mind tells you, stop being hypocritical, self-centered, irritable.

— Marcus Aurelius

It helps me to know that I’m not alone in my struggle to get up and start my work. Every morning is a new opportunity to wake up promptly and do work that matters.

Do you struggle getting up in the morning? How do you motivate yourself to get out of bed and get going? Reply to this post and let me know.
