Many online stores currently do a lot of thinking around better product recommendations and personalization algorithms. One of the biggest fashion stores, Yoox, explains some of their renewal goals in this article. One interesting piece of information is that they plan to use weather information to provide better product recommendations.

“On September 16, Yoox will unveil a new website, mobile site and app, featuring a sleeker, more luxurious appearance and new editorial content streams…”

“The new Yoox.com will also be personalised, with product recommendations based on each user’s purchasing and browsing history, and the weather near them.”

Takeaways:

  • Especially in fashion, ecommerce and editorial magazine-style content will merge. Big ecommerce sites will most likely be the ones that lead the way, possibly even by buying magazine brands.
  • Smart product recommendations are especially important for online stores where customers can buy products from several brands, and where the average size of an order is a key metric (e.g. average order in Yoox is above 300 euros).
  • Using location information to get weather information is a smart move by Yoox. For fashion and clothing, this kind of personalization probably works very well, and we will most likely see even more similar features in the future.
