9 Things I Wish I Knew When Starting My Healing Journey
Because right now, I’m healing from my healing
In late 2011, I began an epic, intense healing journey.
I joined spiritual groups and personal development programs. I attended workshops and retreats. I took online courses. I did therapy. I did coaching.
After 10 years, thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours, I burned out. Here are 9 things I wish I had known.
1. Nobody is broken
When I started on my healing path, I wanted to feel happy, worthy and confident. I didn’t feel okay with who I was. I felt shame around my PTSD symptoms, and I believed I was broken.
For a while, I searched for answers inside personal and spiritual development philosophies. There is a lot to be gained from these approaches, but unfortunately many are watered down by inept practitioners. For example, toxic personal development culture preaches that there is an optimal way to be in the world, and if we aren’t constantly striving to reach this peak state of existence, then we are failing.
However, this is not true. Nobody is broken, and nobody needs to spend thousands of dollars on an endless quest to “fix” themselves.
