Karen

Karen graduated from Holland High School in 2018 and is studying at Kalamazoo College.
She started dreaming of a college education when she was in the sixth grade and was given an assignment to write a letter to her future self.
“It was then that I truly began thinking about attending college, envisioning myself in college after high school, and wondering what I would study,” she said.
Karen credits her family and teachers for their support.
“Specifically my parents, but all of my extended family who reside in Mexico have stressed the importance of post-secondary education.”
The staff at Latin Americans United for Progress recommended Karen to the Promise. We are thrilled she was selected to receive last-dollar Promise support which, when combined with the other scholarships she won, means Karen is able to attend her first choice school, Kalamazoo College.
Karen plans to study Psychology or Neuroscience because she is passionate about the brain and the mind. Her career goal is to become a Neuropsychiatrist and help people struggling with mental disorders.
