Michael graduated from West Ottawa High School in 2018 and is pursuing his degree at Michigan State University.

He started dreaming of a college education when his cousin earned a full ride to Hope College. “She was the first of my family to go on to the next level. I wanted to be like her.”

Michael credits his mother with being the one part of his life that has been 100 percent consistent. And he wants to make his younger brothers proud.

“As I wrote in my college application letters, I have to create the footsteps they will one day follow.”

Michael is known for his optimism:

“Life is about attitude. For example, riding my bike to practice fully padded made my legs very strong for my size, allowing me to help break school track records and become a four-year letterman.”

He plans to study Biology and dreams of working in the medical field and becoming a physician’s assistant in orthopedics.

“I have played sports my whole life, and injuries are a part of the game. I was in the hospital on several occasions and being told I could not play was always the worst possible outcome. Helping athletes get back on their feet is what I want to do for the rest of my life.”
