He is scheduled to executed on June 30.

John graduated from high school and married Joy, his wife, who would also be one of the murder victims. He worked as a security guard at Walls Hospital. He lived with his father-in-law, wife, and his daughter. While working as an overnight security guard, he met a store clerk, Kristie, and they became friendly, leading to an affair. Kristie tried to get Hummel to stop contacting her when she discovered that his wife, Joy, had become pregnant. However, he didn’t stop, and visited Kristies and her daughter at their apartment after she told him that her divorce had finalized. Two days later, a fire broke out at Hummel’s home, killing his wife, father-in-law, and daughter. When the police questioned Hummel, he said that he went to visit a friend, and when the friend didn’t show up, he went looking for Christmas presents. He claimed that he knew nothing of the fire until that morning. However, a couple days later, Hummel was reported missing.

The police investigation revealed that the fire had been set intentionally, and that the victims were already dead prior to the fire. Hummel’s father-in-law and daughter had extensive skull injuries, and his wife was stabbed multiple times. Hummel attempted to reenter the U.S. from Mexico, where he was caught and confessed to a different statement of what happened the night of the murders and how he carried them out. He was sentenced to death in 2011. Prosecutors say that he did this to “woo the girl he met at the convenience store.”
