You opened that note, I have to say, with the alacrity of a dog breaking free from a chain. It was a whole new side of you, a level of alertness entirely different from anything we had seen before.

I knew then you had also been watching, sizing. It was the move you were waiting for, it had to be. Like chess by mail, the first move of a Long Game which you were perfectly equipped, all along, to play.

The wait was interminable--was it really possible you wouldn’t get back to us by the end of the day? It was coy, a little bit cruel, they way you lifted your pen like a conductor’s baton, like a lightning rod, then set it back, almost getting called on for your trouble

But you dropped your reply, at last, right on the final bell, and scuttled away. It was to be a correspondence course. Notes to be the only line, now that this line was opened. We understood.

You returned back the same slip I gave you, and on the opposite side was only a single word:

Sisters

Your conteroffer, your instead.
