The Invasion of Pyrdiwah (2001) — Modern History Summarized
This four-day Bangladeshi military offensive is hardly even known, and yet, it is the first military invasion of the 21st century. This is due to its peaceful resolution without bloodshed.
On 15 April 2001, approximately 1,000 troops from the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) paramilitary organization crossed the Bangladesh — Indian border and quickly captured the town of Pyrdiwah, India (known also as Padua, India). The justification for the invasion was that India illegally occupied the town since the Bangladesh war of independence in 1971.
Inside the town, an Indian Border Security Force (BSF) post with 31 personnel was put under siege by the Bangladesh Rifles. However, instead of fighting, both sides agreed to negotiate the situation. After multiple days of negotiations, on 19 April, the Bangladesh Rifles agreed to withdraw back into Bangladesh territory, ending the invasion without any bloodshed.
