Over 190 million dollars worth of clothing ends up in a landfill annually. That’s about 11 million tons of textiles piling up around the world. And though cotton can take up to 5 months to decompose, leather and nylon clothes typically take over 25 years. You get it — it’s a lot of trash.

But why? you might ask. Why is the fashion industry producing so much waste? You guessed it; fast fashion. While over-consuming plays a major role in this polluting industry, especially in the U.S., the biggest problem lies in the hands of fast fashion companies. These stores are very tight-lipped and work hard to keep their disturbing production methods a secret.

Victoria’s Secret

In 2018, Victoria’s Secret came under scrutiny due to the lack of diversity in their infamous fashion shows. The marketing chief of the runway show worsened public outlook with a statement that essentially said transgender and plus-sized models did not belong in Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows. The runway show was canceled the following year.
