Journalism.design was created in September 2015 to have a look at the many transformations (digital, cultural, technical, and methodological) taking place in journalism. Nowadays, information relies on good journalism but is not limited by that. The place of technology and digital culture is growing and the mastering of these new growth factors can make a crucial difference between success and failure. Yet, the news industry is still an old one trying to transition from an analogic model to a purely digital one while dealing with drying revenue streams and trust crises never encountered before. The goal of this publication is to look beyond the tools and techniques and question the role of tech and digital culture in a news environment. To do so, I try to identify and understand the challenges of the digital transformation in the news industry in relation to the big topics shaping our contemporary world. What is the role of news today? Are legacy media still relevant for young people? How can we reach new audiences, what are the tools and techniques available to do so? Can we reduce our environmental impact? Can we increase our civic impact? Can we find citizens trust back? These are the fields of investigation that are open to us.
