Book: Breakfast at the Honey Creek Cafe. Date of publication: 2020. Genre: Romance. Publisher: Thorndike Press

Jodi Thomas wrote Breakfast at the Honey Creek Cafe, and while she is new to me, she is an established author with several books to her credit. Her writing style reminds me of Stuart Woods.

The book begins with Mayor Piper Jane Mackenzie worrying about her career and a scandal. What did she do? Could it have something to do with the mysterious ginger-colored curly haired man caught changing out of bloody clothes?

From the very beginning, every detail of the novel weaves mystery into the story. We find out that Mayor Mackenzie’s fiance has gone missing without a trace. Speculation amongst the town’s people runs wild. Her original head-in-the-sand approach didn’t help matters.

The town turns to the sheriff, who is also nowhere to be found. The speculation’s intensify as to his whereabouts. Did he suffer the same fate as the fiance?

Around the mid-point of the novel, we witness affectionate bonds being established. Some of those romantic interests caught me off guard. I did not expect one of them to fall in love. Especially since they seemed polar-opposites. The build up to, and execution of, the romance was excellent.

Jodi Thomas wrote one passage that struck a chord with me. “He didn’t know how to be anything without her. He couldn’t be a fighter in a world he didn’t care to live in. He’d lost his mate and had no plans of ever allowing anyone close.” For me, that simple brief paragraph perfectly summed up what it feels like to lose the person you love. Chances are most of us can relate.

In the end, Breakfast at the Honey Creek Cafe was not my normal genre of book. I thought I would try out a western romance. The closest it came to a western was being set in Honey Creek, TX. I didn’t want to put the book down. I had finished over eighty percent in the first sitting. The book held enough mystery to keep me ensconced in the story, and the tasteful romance scenes added the icing onto the cake. I will search out more of Jodi Thomas’s book in the future. Breakfast at the Honey Creek Cafe was the first book in the Honey Creek series.
