The booker prize winner, Tomb of Sand is a fantastic novel depicting queering of age, gender and writing itself. Originally written in Hindi by Geetanjali Shree and translated into English by Daisy Rockwell, the book has gained international fame for its narrative.

Tomb of Sand is the last book of my reading venture in 2023. What a finish to the year! I could end it with a fantastic read. It is an English translation. I read the one originally written in Hindi. Here, I will share my insights regarding the book.

The book is about an old woman on her deathbed in the house of a bureaucrat. All family members have lost hope and pray to God for a comfortable end to all the struggle. However, the old woman gets up once from bed, and leads to a kind of revitalization of the old life. The novel interestingly portrays women’s status, struggles and dreams. It refers to the stigmatic past of partition, too.

The storyline itself is exciting and makes someone curious enough to grab the copy and start reading it. I intend to discuss what I observed while reading the original book written in Hindi.
