Happy Chinese New Year to all those who celebrate! 祝大家新年快乐,万事如意,龙行龘龘!Every year during this festive season, I like to watch a historical Chinese film as I count down the hours to the new year. This year, I decided to rewatch one of my favourite historical Chinese films that portrays a well-known and much beloved Chinese detective and judge — Judge Dee of the Court of Judicial Review (akin to the supreme court). He is often portrayed as the East’s answer to Sherlock Holmes.

A Little Backstory About Judge Dee

Judge Dee, born Di Ren Jie (630AD-700AD), was an important official in the Tang and Zhou Dynasties. He was a highly capable official, holding key posts in the government like the deputy head of the examination bureau of government, even becoming the chancellor twice. In 679, he was assigned to the Court of Judicial Review, where he passed fair and just judgement on around 17,000 cases within a year. Not only was he intelligent and caring, he was also said to very wise and Emperor Wu Zetian of Zhou would often consult him on key decisions, including the reinstating on her heir Li Xian.
