Create a fantastic training and onboarding experience through a private podcast on Storyboard

To date, thousands of companies have used Storyboard to share news, interview leaders, and introduce new members to their team. For the third post in this series, we’ll dive deeper into how companies can use Storyboard to train and onboard new hires.

How can podcasting strengthen your training and onboarding?

We often hear from customers that training and onboarding new employees with audio is time effective and accessible. Material only needs to be recorded once and can be listened to at an employee’s convenience, as well as revisited in the future. Building an audio library of training resources gives organizations a centralized home that can be used for months and years to come. With Storyboard, you’ll even be able to track how your employees are engaging with these trainings through analytics, listener comments, and more.

Storyboard offers an easy-to-use audio platform that engages your team members through storytelling. Your content is kept secure and internal with private podcasting channels for your organization. Go to Storyboard to learn more.

With teams more remote than ever, organizations have looked for ways to replace the traditional experience of in-person onboarding. We hear from our creators that audio solves this problem through its authentic tone and feel. Many listeners compare it to having a close conversation with friends, giving new employees a safe environment to voice feedback and ask questions. With that in mind, private podcasts can help new teammates to feel included in the conversation.

With this in mind, we’ve designed Storyboard in a way that anyone can be a creator. Users can create introductions to the team and ask questions via our commenting feature. When new employees come onboard at Storyboard, we encourage them to record a quick, 60-second snippet to showcase their personality.

Here are a few ideas on how to integrate podcasting into your onboarding process:

FAQs. Are new hires getting all of their questions answered? An onboarding podcast can be a great tool to address common areas of difficulty, build team confidence. We recommend creating a weekly series of frequently asked questions episodes to provide hard-won advice from teammates.

Training modules. Many companies require early employees to complete training for skills and certifications that are critical to their role. Podcasts provide an excellent addition to existing in-person and video training through their on-the-go accessibility and approachable format. Your team will be able to reference this material at any time, such as before going into a sales meeting with a customer. Or say your team is studying to take a certification test at the end of the month, you can make a 10-minute weekly podcast to review key notes from the week to help your team prepare.

New employee introductions. Who are your new hires? Give newcomers a voice in the company from day 1. If you are a remote company, this is a great opportunity for new employees to show off their creative side and quickly help them become connected to the team. Have new employees record a quick, 60-second introduction sharing where they’re from, what they were doing before, and something they are passionate about outside of work.

History of the company. Give new employees a sense of how the company got to where it is today. Inspire your team through stories from the past and the vision that anchored its growth. For any NPR listeners, think of this as your “How I Built This” moment. Our suggestion is to interview 3–4 important voices from your company to detail the company’s beginnings and emphasize where it’s going in the future.
