VR DP, Jens Kull, with his custom-built 360° camera rig.

One of the best things about being a filmmaker is all the cool gear you get to play with. And if you’re anything like us here at Storyhunter, you’re obsessed with using that gear to capture the perfect shot. But that doesn’t always come easily and you might just have to put some work into getting it. That’s why building a camera rig opens up so many possibilities for showing off your own shooting style. These five custom-built camera rigs — both odd and awe-inspiring — exemplify that uniqueness and make us want to go out and film something incredible!

1. The “Off-Roader” Rig

2. The “Face-Replacement” Rig

3. The “Who Needs a Dolly?” Rig

4. The “Rollercoaster” Rig

5. The “Playground Throwback” Rig

Plus, check out these two fun custom rigs sent to us by filmmakers in the Storyhunter community.

Robert Carson Mataxis, Locomotion Media Group

Carson’s rig below features five-channel wireless audio and a Canon 5D Mark III on a counter-balanced Zacuto shoulder rig.

John Dickie and Jens Kull, Freelance Filmmakers

John and Jens designed and engineered the custom VR rig below for the Sony A7. They recently used it to shoot a film about black holes and the large millimeter telescope in Mexico for Seeker.
