January ScreenUp NYC. PC: Paige Sommer

Storyhunter welcomed a full house at The Mockingbird for our January ScreenUp in NYC. A crowd of filmmakers, producers, journalists, and more packed themselves into the bar to watch a few great documentaries from the New York Post, Gizmodo, and The New York Times. Their top producers presented some of their most recent works — ranging from a short piece on a lady obsessed with pink to a serious look at the political climate in North Korea.

This pink-obsessed lady wants to ‘drown’ in the color

Publisher: New York Post
Storyhunter filmmaker: Fanny T.*

Alex mamlet, the Director of Development and Production at the New York Post, and filmmaker Fanny T. presented their recent short doc on Hollywood’s Pink Lady. Previously, Fanny filmed a popular doc on the Green Lady of NYC for the New York Post, so when she pitched this story to Alex, it was an easy decision to commission her again.

The last of the iron lungs

Publisher: Gizmodo
Storyhunter filmmaker: Jared C.

A 2017 Storyhunter Staff Pick, this documentary is about the life of one of the last polio survivors in America still living in an iron lung. Gizmodo producers, japhetweeks and Danielle Steinberg, presented the video, giving the ScreenUp audience an inside look at what it was like working with the filmmaker and telling the man’s inspiring story.

From North Korea, With Dread

Publisher: The New York Times

After being invited to North Korea by their government, NY Times Senior Video Correspondent Adam Ellick, reporter Nicholas Kristof, and their team traveled to the isolated country to film a short documentary. While they hoped to get real interviews and scenes from the country beyond the standard planned visit, they were mostly prevented from doing so. However, they were able to capture the unnerving sentiment that the North Korean people are furious with Trump and primed for war. The ScreenUp audience was captivated by the video and had dozens of questions for Adam, who presented it.
