It’s a new year and a new chance for filmmakers and publishers on Storyhunter to have their videos selected as one of our monthly Staff Picks. During our Friday Storytime, where our team gathers each week to watch the best videos produced through our platform, we picked our three January favorites. From an all-female motorcycle group in New Orleans to a refugee school in Malaysia, here are the best stories kicking off 2018:

Pamela’s fight to pass the Dignity for Incarcerated Women Act

Change.org
Storyhunter Documentary Shooter: Woodruff L.

Change.org, a non-profit petition platform, needed a filmmaker to cover this story about Pamela Winn, who was six weeks pregnant when she started her prison sentence for a non-violent act. After she suffered a miscarriage from falling and being chained in shackles, she started a petition for better treatment for female prisoners, including a ban on shackling pregnant women in federal prison.

Riding With New Orleans’s All-Female Motorcycle Club

Great Big Story
Storyhunter Documentary Shooter: Alexander G.

Great Big Story urgently needed a filmmaker to cover this short doc on the Caramel Curves, an all-female motorcycle club in New Orleans. After posting an assignment on Storyhunter, they hired Alexander G. to shoot the story of the passionate ladies breaking stereotypes and empowering women to do what they love. After feeling removed from the culture of all-male bike clubs, co-founders Tru and Coco got together to start the club, and have since become an inspiration to girls in their neighborhood.

Refugee Empowers Other Refugees

AJ+
Storyhunter Video Journalist: King Chai W.

Mohammed Sadek, a refugee, started the Rohingya Community School to offer free education for children in his community. AJ+ hired Storyhunter journalist King Chai W. to cover the story on Mohammed, and how he believes that everyone has the right to free education, regardless of their socio-economic status.
