I am your lifeboat

I am your lifeboat
But you are the captain
I am your compass
But you set the course

A diaspora of lives just like yours
Set out from the source
Like currents on the sacred Ganges
Swept along into the deep,
Hidden

I remember you as a child
Whispering to me from under rumpled covers
Your soul just below the surface
Calling me by name

A black cat will cross you
The wolf will hound
Your ship will sail too close to the wind
Will you call me by my name?

I am your lifeboat
But you are the captain
