I Pulled Myself From the Darkness

A letter to sadness

to sadness:

the sand swallowed me whole one day,
and for a while i was sinking.
i fought the earth,
pulling my body up
with all of my strength,
though i sank deeper still.

my body became a seed one day,
and my mind became water.
i was both the healer and the survivor.
and i grew.
it took days, weeks, months,
but slowly i grew.

light pierced the ground one day,
and i could finally see beyond the darkness
that had become my home.
i could finally see how much i had grown.

i emerged from the rigid sand and
sun rays pressed kisses on my cheeks.
and i smiled.

(i defeated you.)
