Weep Not for Your Country

Although the ones above us cry
and those below us writhe,
do not weep for your country, boy
for it alone survives.

For even when the stars are dark
and forests speak no more
do not weep for the nation, girl
for it outlasts the war.

Instead of country, home and land
it’s love that needs our cries
humanity and grace of peace
(abandoned, paralyzed.

So weep not for your country, men
and others, do not fret
but learn, instead, of what we’ve done
as time makes us forget.
