Winter Unfolded

And the Children Thought It Normal

Winter was cloaked in expectation
early darkness of sunsets
and brisk north winds that whipped
barren tree branches into submission.

Transplanted limbs for some deserving snowman
stolen by children bundled in crocheted scarves
mylar jackets and warm, unlined mittens
pitching snow balls in feverish summer sandlot fashion.

Then, unexpected surges of the thermometer
accompanied by warmer Spring air and rain,
much like April on a January day,
waiting for nature to re-adjust its thermostat once again
until the next sign of climate change.

As the crow flies and the birds bask in the sunshine of my balcony
right outside my window, chirping
knowing full well the cloak of winter will soon be returning,
I realize my children think this is all normal.
