Crystal: Welcome to our storytelling blog! We are a group of students at the Mailman School of Public Health. A commonly known African proverb says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” We were interested in learning how the community around young children in the United States has come together to raise children in the midst of a global pandemic.

Fatema: The COVID-19 pandemic has not only significantly impacted the physical health of individuals and their families, but has also had an oftentimes devastating effect upon their mental health and psychosocial wellbeing (MHPSS) due to the sudden and drastic social isolation as a result of the precautionary measures taken to reduce the spread. There are already so many different factors in a child’s life and environment that can impede or even permanently hurt their development, and for an unprecedented crisis such as this (and not one seen for nearly a hundred years), different cases and outcomes are still wholly unfamiliar and being encountered every day.

Nicole: We created this blog to find out how the village of professionals, public health students, and parents found ways to try and to mitigate the harmful consequences of the lockdown on children, and support their mental health and social and emotional learning through the pandemic. We created this blog on Medium so the resources and ideas mentioned here can quickly and easily be shared. We hope you find it a source of use and inspiration! I know we did.
