Fansplaining’s Elizabeth Minkel Speaking at Episodic

If you’ve been following the announcements you’ll know that the line-up for Episodic is already filled with award winning culture makers across all forms of entertainment. Throughout the day you’ll be hearing stories from the makers of episodic TV, games, comics and podcasts that fans come back to again and again. Since the birth of The Stream there’s a lot of conversation around how to get spikes of attention. But it’s the ‘coming back’ bit that we’re obsessed with at Storythings.
Why do fans commit to a piece of culture? What makes them hand over so much of their attention? How do they use culture to shape their identities and form communities? To answer these questions and many more there was only one person to turn to.
Elizabeth Minkel is a fan culture expert who has spoken on the topic everywhere from Princeton University to San Diego Comic-Con, and her writing has appeared in the New Statesman, The Millions, The Guardian, The New Yorker, and more.

She is the co-host of the Fansplaining podcast, a podcast about fans and fan culture, and co-curator of The Rec Center a weekly fandom newsletter. She did her master’s in the digital humanities at University College London, where she studied digital communities and how they engage with the things they love. We’re such fans of her work at Storythings we recently invited her to become Audience Development Editor at How We Get To Next.
Elizabeth always has fascinating insights into the behaviours of fans and we’re delighted to have her on the line-up. Join us on October 20th at Episodic to hear a remarkable group of storytellers share their stories.
