Grandma Martin and Gramps Martin celebrating an anniversary

For the holidays, we’re publishing some of our customers’ favorite recipes. The following recipe was sent to us by Kathleen.

A cookie that my great-grandmother used to bake for us at Christmas time continues to be a favorite Christmas tradition for us.

We refer to the recipe as Grandma Martin’s Sand Tarts. It has also been called Real Old German Style Sand Tarts.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb butter
  • 1 lb sugar (~2 cups)
  • 1 lb flour (~3 cups)
  • 1 well beaten egg
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 egg white, beaten
  • Pecan nut meats
  • Cinnamon sugar mix

Instructions

Sift flour, then measure. Add baking soda to flour. Cream butter and sugar together. Add beaten egg, mix thoroughly. Add flour mix, 1/2 cp at a time. Refrigerate overnight.

Keep dough in the refrigerator while you work with a small amount at a time. Roll out small portion on lightly floured surface — rolling very thin. Cut with cookie cutters.

Brush beaten egg white lightly, then sprinkle cinnamon/sugar mix and place a half of a pecan on the top.

Bake at 350 degrees for ~8 minutes.

Happy Holidays!
