The Scorpion cocktail is a delightful tiki drink that originated in the 1940s at the famous Tiki-Ti bar in Los Angeles. It’s a refreshing, complex, and exotic cocktail that perfectly captures the essence of the tropical paradise. This cocktail was created by Ray Buhen, one of the original bartenders at the Tiki-Ti, and has since become a classic in the tiki cocktail repertoire.

Now, let’s embark on the journey of crafting the enigmatic Scorpion cocktail.

Ingredients:

For the Scorpion Bowl:

  • 2 oz Light rum
  • 1 1/2 oz Brandy
  • 1 oz Orgeat syrup
  • 1 oz Orange juice
  • 1/2 oz Fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz Lime juice
  • 1 oz Simple syrup
  • 1/2 cup Crushed ice
  • 1/2 cup Ice cubes
  • Sliced orange and mint sprigs for garnish

For the Scorpion Glass:

  • 1 oz Dark rum
  • 1/2 oz Brandy
  • 3/4 oz Orange juice
  • 3/4 oz Fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz Orgeat syrup
  • 1/2 oz Simple syrup
  • Crushed ice

Preparation:

For the Scorpion Bowl:

  1. Fill a large bowl or tiki mug with crushed ice and set it aside.
  2. In a shaker, combine the light rum, brandy, orgeat syrup, orange juice, lemon juice, lime juice, and simple syrup.
  3. Add ice cubes to the shaker and shake vigorously for about 10–15 seconds.
  4. Strain the mixture into the prepared tiki bowl or mug.
  5. Garnish the drink with a slice of orange and a sprig of mint.

For the Scorpion Glass:

  1. Fill a tall glass or tiki glass with crushed ice.
  2. In a shaker, combine the dark rum, brandy, orange juice, lemon juice, orgeat syrup, and simple syrup.
  3. Shake the mixture vigorously for about 10–15 seconds.
  4. Strain the mixture into the prepared glass over the crushed ice.

As you savor the Scorpion cocktail, remember that the sting of the scorpion lies not in its venom, but in the mysteries it holds. In life, the answers to our deepest questions may not be found in the obvious, but in the subtle and hidden. The cocktail, much like life, is a blend of various elements that come together to create a harmonious experience.
