The Twilight Sad — O2 Forum Kentish Town, 23rd November 2019
There’s few bands that are in quite the position that The Twilight Sad seem to have landed in. 16 years the band have now been active, quietly pushing out good post-rock albums for all those that could hear them shouting through the scottish rain.
This all changed this year. The band seemed to gain an unholy momentum with the release of IT WON/T BE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME and understandably so. It cemented their ability to craft albums with the greatest out there and collate a collection of strong songs that can’t help but connect with a wider audience. The live shows began to reflect this. I remember seeing them in February this year, just a few weeks after the release of the new album and the atmosphere was electric, the new material already firm favourites of a packed venue. This band were on the up.
The return to London was a triumphant one. Playing the O2 Forum in Kentish Town (coincidently the last London venue played by their peers and friends Frightened Rabbit), The Twilight Sad had nothing to prove and everything to give.
There were moments of pure joy in the bands faces as they played and it was impossible not to smile along. Few acts really show how much playing means to them as much as The Twilight Sad, maybe it’s because it’s been a 16 year journey and no, they’re not household names quite yet — but they’ve got the talent, discography and passion to deserve to be — maybe soon, they will be.
Note perfect and passionate, it’s a joy to watch The Twilight Sad — they could easily steal the mantle of best band touring right now because it really is their time. The stars are aligning and it sounds fantastic.
There’s going out with a bang, then there’s blowing a several thousand watt PA system. It was only fitting they went for the latter.
