We’re a group of designers, researchers and deep-thinkers that are looking to share our thoughts from practice and explore our ideas with a wider audience. So why now, and who exactly are we?
The world is in a transformative moment. As we write, some countries are emerging, or reentering public lockdowns necessary to curb the spread of COVID-19. Already in the years leading up to this latest pandemic, both the private and the public sector have been struggling with profound challenges ranging from a heating planet, increasing wealth inequality, systemic injustice and digital disruption — all of which impact every sector we work in, including property, culture, transportation, consumer products and education.
As we resume, these challenges will require different skill sets, methods and team structures to make sense of them. There’s a need for a new type of integrated practice to help: Arup Studio is a mixed discipline collective of strategists, conceptual designers, technology designers, architects, urban planners, ethnographers, services designers, and storytellers.
We help clients to frame and to concept new types of integrated experiences for people in a variety of spaces. In addition, we collaborate with our Arup colleagues who can then expand initial ideas into the structures, technology, and policies that will be manifested. We’re attempting to work differently, as the challenges of the present will not be solved using the approaches of the past.
Our design practice allows us to create new solutions that span spaces, services, products, strategies and often unseen technologies. This happens through understanding people’s needs and evolving ideas through ongoing cycles of learning and making. We strive to create a positive impact on people and society while meeting client objectives, and reducing the risk of wasting time or resources to solve the wrong problem.
