Montellier sparkling water

1. Industry Profile and Information:

Carbonated water usually contains more carbon dioxide than flat water, enabling us to enjoy a bubbly sensation, without consuming sugar like we would when drinking sodas.

The carbonation process was first invented by Joseph Priestley in England in 1767, the process, wasn’t commercialized until 1786 in Switzerland by a Jacob Schweppes.

Carbonated beverages were first bottled for sale back in 1835, and this is also when people began adding flavoring to their carbonated drinks. Once this happened, flavored carbonated beverages became a mainstay in Western culture and the drink of choice of many consumers.

Originally, carbonated beverages were only stored in bottles, because keeping the carbon dioxide inside of cans without it trying to bust through the can’s seams proved to be a challenge. Today, you can find carbonated beverages in bottles and cans, with more and more people jumping on the carbonation craze while attempting to kick their sugary soda habit.

Europe holds the largest share in the global sparkling water market, followed by North America and the Asia Pacific, respectively. Between 2009 and 2014, the volume of carbonated bottled water sold in Canada increased by 47%, according to market research firm Euromonitor International.

In 2014, carbonated bottled water posted the fastest sales growth in the bottled water category, increasing 13% to $205 million. Carbonated bottled water planned set to post the fastest growth rates over the forecast period, growing 9% to reach $311 million in 2019.

In fact, as per so statistics that have been done, retail sales of plain sparkling water amounted to around 435.7 million U.S. dollars in Canada in 2018, making it the most popular type of carbonated water. Sales of flavored sparkling water are expected to outperform sales of plain sparkling water in the coming years in Canada.

2. Company Profile and Information:

Montellier sparkling water is proudly Canadian and they are committed to celebrating and sharing the natural riches that our country has to offer. Founded by Alex Coulombe ltée who began operations in 1905.

Alex Coulombe is a family-owned business that bottles major brands Pepsi, 7Up, Mountain Dew, Mug, Crush, Schweppes, and Dr Pepper, as well as Crystalline spring water and Montellier carbonated spring water, in addition, to distribute many other products. The 400 employees are grouped together at its production plant in Quebec City and in their four distribution centers. Montellier carbonated natural spring water has been bottled in Quebec City since 1984 and has been distributed across Canada for three years.

The high-quality sparkling water is sourced from a pure underground spring in Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval, Quebec, providing some of the highest quality water in the world. As the water flows through the underground layers of rock to reach the spring, the water naturally collects minerals.

It is naturally enhanced with a variety of minerals including magnesium, calcium, potassium, bicarbonates, and others, the water is naturally filtered and nothing is added in the bottling process. They closely monitor and responsibly manage our spring, which is a renewable resource replenished through the hydrologic cycle.

3. Product Profile:

When it’s summer, it means that is the time to stay hydrated. Hot weather and hotter sunshine usually drain our fluids faster than we think, that’s why we need to make sure we are fully hydrated each day! The one drink that has stood up a lot lately and it has exploded in popularity in a few different factors, it is sparkling water.

In some studies, both still and sparkling water were counted as “water,” but tea, coffee, and other water-based beverages were not. Now we can include it toward our total daily need for water.

Montellier carbonated water is a natural, crisp, and refreshing source to add a touch of sparkle to any occasion, the natural flavor comes in all three sizes (355mL, 500mL, and 1 Liter). They started with the 1 Liter bottle, where it is available in four flavors: unflavored, natural lime, lemon essence, and grapefruit essence, then they introduced the slim can to the market on May 2018th to offer the accessibility of the water on-the-go.

It was recognized in January 2020 as one of the top sparkling water with a comparison with local and international brands. The product is available at some supermarket & grocery store, where they are the product is available for a specific category or targeted demographic.

As part of PepsiCo Beverages Canada distribution system, Montellier joined the Alberta market at the end of 2018 through Sobeys starting with the slim can, and then they joined the Loblaw family in 2019. Now it is available at SuperStore, NoFrills, Shoppers Drug Mart, and of course Safeway.

So why are the retailers that dress us starting to feed us and top up our drinks as well?

Lorna Hall, head of market intelligence at trend forecasting agency WGSN, says the key motivation behind retailers opening up their space to restaurants, cafés, and bars, is to create excitement and give customers another reason to visit, at a time when customers are increasingly shopping online.

This new market is a perfect place to present our product, because these places were created to keep the customers coming to the stores, most of these multi boutique-style food places, offer food, coffee, and tea or an afternoon alcoholic beverage.

All provinces except Alberta have government-owned retail liquor monopolies. Alberta has only privately owned liquor store policies and only here liquor stores may sell alcoholic beverages in urban areas.
