Jonathan Hernandez

Describe yourself in 3 words

Blessed

“ I just feel blessed to be able to have the family that I have, blessed to have the job that I have. Blessed that God gives me breath every day and that each day is a new opportunity to grow and learn and be better.

Humble

“I have learned in life to never regard yourself as better than anyone else. I believe you can learn from anyone. I think it is important to always stay hungry and humble and be willing to learn from everyone.

Hardworking

“Whenever I do something, I like to give it my best. I think about my parents, and how they both migrated from different countries to the United States. They had to start from the bottom and work their way up. They face many challenges such as a language barrier and racism at times, but they still pushed through to give me and my siblings a better life. For that, I am forever grateful. Their drive inspires me every day.”

Why did you join Strategio’s Simulator?

“I joined Strategio’s Simulator, because I saw that it was a great opportunity to grow and learn in DevOps. Besides all of the amazing technologies they are teaching us I also believe in their mission statement which is to increase representation for all people within the tech industry.”

What were you doing before you joined Strategio?

“Before joining Strategio I was working as an IT Specialist / Python Developer for an E-commerce company called Phoenix Leather Goods. They are a wonderful company that gave me the opportunity to grow and learn especially with Python. During the last half of 2021, I had a strong desire to learn about DevOps, so in addition to working at PLG, I also completed a DevOps Bootcamp during my time off.”

What are you most excited about this year?

“I am excited for the opportunity to learn new technologies and potentially work as a DevOps engineer.”

What made you decide to get into tech?

“Ever since my childhood I have always been inclined towards technology and more specifically computers. Whenever my parents needed help troubleshooting they would always ask me. I always enjoyed figuring out how things worked so working with technology came naturally to me.”

What do you like to do during your spare time?

“I like to spend a lot of my spare time with my family. I have a beautiful wife named Maria and two little dogs named Kobe, and Bentley. I also like to help out at our local church as much as I can, and also play basketball with friends.”

Kobe and Bentley

What is your favorite cultural value at Strategio?

“My favorite cultural value at Strategio is Fail-fast and learn. This concept of embracing failure and using it as a learning opportunity is something new to me. I feel like I grew up with the notion that it was not okay to fail. But I realized that living this way made me afraid to try new things because I was scared to fail or let others down. I now see that it is okay to fail, as long as get up and continue to try. If you take the fear away and continue to get up and try again you will grow exponentially faster.”

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

“I love to go to the Dominican Republic. I am half Dominican, so I love to go and embrace my culture (The beautiful weather and beaches are a plus too lol).”

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

What’s your favorite restaurant?

“Any Italian restaurant with a good lasagna is good for me. I recently went to an Italian restaurant in Chicago named RoseBud. They had an amazing meat lasagna. Highly recommend it!”

What advice would you give to the next group of technologists joining the simulator?

I would tell them to give it their best! You made it through the selection process and were chosen because you are very talented. Believe in yourself, work hard and you will see that great things will happen.”
