I’m going to let in on a little secret(read, completely not a secret)…I’m a career pivoter. If you told my 17-year-old self that I would be empowering early career, underrepresented talent in TECH, my head would spin. Fast forward some umpteen years later I had a rewarding and fun career in retail management and a successful transition into Talent + Partnerships(I concentrate on early career talent in tech but, that’s a different story for a different day). Enough about me, let’s get into it, shall we?

Transitioning to a new career can be an exciting but daunting experience. Whether you’re looking for a new challenge, seeking greater fulfillment, or simply trying to improve your work-life balance, pivoting careers can help you achieve your goals. However, before you make the switch, there are several important steps you should take to ensure that you’re fully prepared for the journey ahead. It requires careful planning, research, and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. In this blog post, we’ll explore some essential things to consider before transitioning careers and provide tips to help you make a successful and seamless transition.

  1. Identify your motivations

Before deciding to switch careers, it’s important to understand why you want to make the change. Are you feeling unfulfilled in your current job? Are you looking for a new challenge? Do you want to make more money? By identifying your motivations, you can determine if a career change is the right choice for you and what type of career might be the best fit.

2. Research potential careers

Once you’ve identified your motivations, it’s time to research potential careers. Look for jobs that align with your skills, interests, and values. You can use online resources like LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and industry-specific job boards to explore different industries and job titles. Talk to people who work in the field you’re interested in to gain insight into the day-to-day realities of the job.

3. Evaluate your skills and experience

Before you apply for jobs in a new field, evaluate your skills and experience to determine if you need additional training or education. Consider taking courses or attending workshops to develop new skills or update existing ones. You can also volunteer or freelance in your chosen field to gain practical experience and build a portfolio.

4. Create a plan

Once you’ve identified a new career path, create a plan to help you achieve your goals. This might include setting short-term and long-term goals, creating a budget, and developing a timeline for your transition. A plan can help you stay on track and focused as you navigate the challenges of switching careers.

5. Network and build relationships

Networking is an essential part of any job search, especially when transitioning to a new career. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and connect with people on LinkedIn to build relationships and learn about job opportunities. Be proactive and reach out to people in your network to ask for advice or introductions to people who can help you achieve your goals.

6. Be patient and persistent

Switching careers can take time and effort. Be patient with yourself and the process, and don’t give up if you don’t see results right away. Stay persistent in your job search, and continue to learn and grow as you work towards your career goals.

Ultimately, transitioning to a new career can be an exciting opportunity to pursue your passions, challenge yourself, and grow both professionally and personally. However, it’s important to approach the transition with careful consideration, planning, and preparation. By identifying your motivations, researching potential careers, evaluating your skills and experience, creating a plan, networking, and staying patient and persistent, you can successfully navigate the transition and find a career that brings you happiness and fulfillment. Remember that every journey is different, and it’s never too late to make a change that will positively impact your life.

If you’re thinking about making a change in your career, good luck with your career transition! If you know someone who is on that journey, share this blog post with them in a show of support.
