Stratifyd was pleased to host a Data Hackathon at the HQ Charlotte space last weekend. HQ is one of the hot spots for startups and entrepreneurs in the region, and a terrific venue for a hackathon. As a result, we were able to attract a good group of programmers and data scientists to the event. We were particularly pleased to see so many students from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte participate in the hackathon.

The data hackathon event consisted of:

  • A programming track for software developers interfacing with the Stratifyd SignalsTM data analytics platform.
  • An analyst track for participants that wanted to use the powerful capabilities of Signals to answer questions.
  • Judging of projects by a panel of Stratifyd management and industry CIOs.

The top four teams presented to the audience and the panel of judges. The top projects were:

  • The first Presidential Debate, analyzing comments and sentiment
  • Predicting drug effects by analyzing data from WebMD
  • Analyzing citizen protests from a recent shooting by the police
  • The Wells Fargo issue on unauthorized account creation, and the alignment of social media sentiment with the stock price.

The hackathon participants leveraged the power of the Signals platform to quickly analyze large data sets. Since Signals handles structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data, the teams were able to filter and assess what people were saying about each topic. Unstructured text comments are easily merged into the overall analysis, where the data can pivot on various structured fields. Our Signals platform is attuned to this environment and it gives the end-user the capability to construct complex filtering mechanisms, and pivot into different area of interests.

The overall winner of the data hackathon was the team who worked on the Wells Fargo analysis: Adarsh Nair, Pujitha Gangarapu, Yang Li, and Sampa Sanyal. Here is a picture of the winning team, along with the judges.

Signals is a powerful business intelligence tool with particular strength in analyzing text. The platform makes fast work of surveys, emails, social media comments, customer experience data, and open data sources. We believe that all data, even the smallest aspect of data, bears a story to be told.

The hackathon teams demonstrated the ability to analyze by Geography, Time, Demographics, and with Comparative views. Signals enables the user to examine multiple industries side-by-side to determine if people are saying things differently. (See related blog post: Analysis of Two Hotel Chains) The winning team brought in stock market data on Wells Fargo and analyzed it side by side with social media data.

We are thankful to HQ Charlotte for hosting the hackathon for us, and we hope to make it an annual event in Charlotte.
