- Examining consumer reviews on lawn tractors from multiple retailers

Retailer buyers often need to collect data on products they carry, as well as competing products, to understand product performance and the reasons behind sales numbers. One of Signals platform’s strength is to easily conduct competitive research and drive actionable insights. We were asked by a major retailer to conduct competitive analysis on a product that has underperformed. As Signals’ analysis shows, buyers can now quickly educate themselves about consumer wants and needs.

The analysis is focused on customer feedback and comments on two lawn tractor models, John Deere D105 17.5 — HP Automatic 42-in Riding Lawn Mower with Mulching Capability and Cab Cadet XT1 Enduro Series LT 42 in. 18 HP Kohler Hydrostatic Gas Front- Engine Riding Mower. There two models are sold at Hope Depot and Lowe’s at $1499.

We utilized Signals’s built-in data connectors to Home Depot and Lowe’s. Other data connectors to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube can also help you collect brand or product specific social media comments. See related blog post: Data Connectors for Customer Analysis.

Signals’ analysis show that both John Deere Model # BG20873 and Cub Cadet Model # BG20873 have over 50% 5-star customer ratings and positive customer sentiment. John Deere competitive advantage is its powerful Kohler engine and repair services. Cub Cadet’s model is strong in comfort and design: its well-thought small features such as compartments of keys, comfortable seat and ease of use makes up for its highly positive customer sentiment.

As customers compare prices and services at different Retailers online or in-store, retailer promotions often play a part in their decision journey. In this case, Home Depot’s store and online discount offers customers additional incentive to purchase.

Retailer buyers, as well as product managers, can easily glean insights on the competitive marketplace for a product they want to research through Signals augmented visual analytics. (See related blog post: Painting the Competition Picture.) Buyers and managers could analyze user reviews on the various retailers’ websites and social media platforms.
