During the holidays, you’re bound to be working with volunteers at your church. You’re stressed. You’re tired. You’re turning green and stealing Christmas from all of Whoville… Okay, you’re not there yet, but it’s coming.

Let’s take a look at a few reminders of the best practices to managing and leading a team this holiday season.

Give Your Volunteers Time and Tools

We know you are in the season of burning the midnight oil. The great thing about having a team of volunteers is that you are able to delegate tasks so your plate isn’t as full and you don’t burn out as the leader. It’s important to make sure you are giving your volunteers the training time and correct tools, in order for them to best succeed in the process. Make sure to answer any potential questions and make them feel empowered to do their tasks at hand.

Set Goals As A Team

Make sure you identify weekly goals, or service goals, as a team. Take a few minutes before or after service to keep every person on the same page, and with the same overall goal in place. This will help with vision casting, as well as overall team morale. Does your church staff have goals for the Christmas season? Share some of those with your volunteers as a rallying point.

Appreciate, then Celebrate

It’s finished! The holidays are over and now comes the time of restoration… at least for a few days. Take a moment to appreciate each individual who has volunteered and served on your team. This can be a text, a card, or a face-to-face message delivered after the service in the hallway. The important part is making sure your team feels seen for what you all accomplished together, and for a greater good. And there’s never anything wrong with throwing a party to laugh at any hiccups after it’s all said and done.
