AMI-Quebec: Action on Mental Illness
What we do:
AMI-Quebec Action on Mental Illness is a non-profit organization in Montreal, Canada that helps families manage the effects of mental illness through support, education, guidance, and advocacy. Our programs for family caregivers include support groups, workshops, counselling for families, online learning, family peer support, outreach, and more. Some programs are open to people living with mental illness too. We never let anyone leave empty handed — even if you’re got a situation that is not something we can help with, we will always guide you to somewhere that can.
Who we help:
AMI-Quebec helps family caregivers cope with mental illness in a loved one. Family includes those in the circle of support of someone living with mental illness (parents, spouses, siblings, adult children, friends, etc.) Anyone can be a caregiver at any age. One of our recent projects involves working on how best to support young carers — youth who take care of a loved one but who may need some help and support themselves.
Why we do what we do:
Caregiving is often a difficult and long-term task for which family members are not necessarily prepared. We help families to cope with these difficulties by better understanding mental illness and their own situations. This helps caregivers to provide the best support to their loved one while taking care of their own well-being.
How you can help:
All our programs and services are free! But less than half our operating budget comes from recurrent government sources, so we fundraise all year round to keep it that way. One of the coolest ways we get financial support is from people like you who hold a fundraiser for us. The money that you raise from your charity stream fundraiser will go towards making sure that all families continue to get free support and help from AMI.
