Are you searching for the perfect microphone to start with? Do you require an upgrade to your existing tools? If yes, then you are on the right page!

It’s no secret that the quality of your content is determined by the quality of your tools to a large extent. This is why it is important to choose the right microphone for streaming. In this article, we have brought you a rundown of the best microphones for streaming in 2022. We will also show you a few tips and tricks that can help you make the right decision on the microphone to use.

Types of Microphones

You get different sounds from microphones because there are different types of microphones. The distinguishing factor in microphones is the construction of their diaphragms. Every microphone has a diaphragm which is the part of the microphone that converts sound to an electrical signal that can be sent out through a speaker. Despite having several types, all of the microphones you see around can be grouped into just three main types;

  • Condenser microphone
  • Ribbon microphone
  • Diaphragm microphone

1. Condenser microphones:

These mics have the most popular applications in studio recordings. They are excellent for use in controlled environments where there is little or no noise, and great acoustics. They are also great for vocals and low-sound producing instruments like guitar and acoustic violin. Condenser microphones are extremely sensitive and will pick the slightest noise which is why they should be used in low-noise areas. The sound pressure level of these microphones are fragile and cannot stand loud noise.

Working principle

They have a highly specialized capacitor. They have two plates. One of the plates is very light and acts like a diaphragm. When struck by sound waves, the diaphragm vibrates causing a change in the distance, hence a change capacitance between the two plates. The capacitance changes to the rhythm of the sound waves, thus, creating an electrical signal.

The accuracy with which the condenser mic follows the sound waves, causes it to offer superior sound as compared to other mic types. They also have the widest frequency and the best transient response.

There are three types of condenser microphones;

  • Large-diaphragm
  • Small diaphragm
  • Electret.

2. Ribbon microphone

Ribbon microphones were one of the earlier mic types available. They use a unique diaphragm type. They do an excellent job of capturing the natural sounds of instruments. They have a warm, natural sound that makes them stand out despite being around for decades.

Working principle

Ribbon microphones have a very simple working principle. Unlike the other mics that create sound by responding to sound pressure level, these work by reacting to a change in air velocity. The design is simple. A metal ribbon is suspended between two magnets. The vibration of the ribbon creates a voltage corresponding to the change in the air velocity. They are quite fragile, and if the ribbon gets damaged, the entire mic will be condemned.

3. Dynamic microphones:

If you want to record a loud instrument, then this is your go-to microphone. Dynamic mics can handle high SPLs and this makes them highly multi-purpose. The moveable components in them are very little, and they do not require an internal amplifier or external power source.

Working principle

They work with the electromagnetic principle. With this principle, an electric current is formed when metal passes through a magnetic field. It can be designed as a moving coil, or as a ribbon.

If you see a microphone at a live band, music concert, or press conference, it is likely a dynamic microphone.

Factors to Consider When Purchasing a Microphone

Several factors will determine the type of microphone you purchase, There are different requirements for different applications. Here are some factors to be considered before purchasing a microphone;

  • The environment: Where do you need the microphone? This will give you a clue as to the best mic to buy. You have seen the differences between the mics, and this will help you choose which best suits your needs.
  • What kind of audio do you want to produce?: The most expensive dynamic microphone will be completely useless if you wish to capture the slightest details in your sound. The best mic for this is the condenser microphone.
  • Consider all the specifications: Check that the impedance, frequency response, polar pattern, sensitivity, and maximum SPL all suit your needs.
  • Budget: Some microphones are more expensive than others. Condenser mics are relatively cheap, while ribbon mics are the most expensive. Both cheap and expensive mics will produce good sounds depending on the specifications.
