Did you know that 5 million girls under the age of 16 give birth each year — becoming mothers while still children themselves? Or that girls are two times more likely than boys to never set foot in a classroom? Worldwide, boys are often encouraged to get an education to prepare for work, while girls carry heavy household responsibilities that keep them from school, increasing odds of early marriage and pregnancy.

COVID-19 school closures have interrupted education for 1.6 billion children, and experience suggests many girls will never return due to increasing pressure to work, risk of child marriage, bans on pregnant girls attending school and lost contact with education. An estimated 500,000 more girls risk being forced into child marriage and as many as one million more are expected to have become pregnant in 2020 as a result of the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic

How Save the Children Supports Women and Girls Around the World:

Everyone benefits when girls are empowered to lead their lives, speak their minds & determine their futures. At Save the Children, we place gender equality at the heart of all we do. This includes our work to eliminate gender-based violence, child marriage and other harmful practices, empower women and girls, and promote positive and diverse expressions of masculinity. We start at the beginning — right from birth, giving children a healthy start. We help school-age girls get an education (and stay educated!) delaying marriage and pregnancy, and helping them acquire much-needed life skills. We work with boys, men and parents, to fight gender bias in families.

Plus, we empower girls to speak up and challenge norms that discriminate based on gender. From early childhood, we reach hundreds of millions of children each year through programs promoting gender equality and empowerment to create the gender-equal future all girls and boys deserve. Since 2000, we have helped achieve a 25% decline in child marriage — empowering 11 million girls to stay in school.

This year for International Women’s Day we encourage you to help forge a more gender equal world. Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality and help make a difference for women and girls all over the world.
