Fundraise with the Alzheimer’s Association to help make a difference!

You can now stand up to the darkness of Alzheimer’s by scheduling a stream to fundraise for the Alzheimer’s Association. June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month and it’s also when we recognize The Longest Day — the day with the most light, the summer solstice. On June 20, thousands of participants from across the world come together to fight Alzheimer’s through an activity of their choice.

What is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking and behavior. It worsens over time, killing more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. Worldwide, 50 million people are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. The prevalence of Alzheimer’s is expected to grow dramatically in the coming years as the number of people living with the disease — currently more than 6 million Americans — continues to increase. Devastating, relentless and debilitating, Alzheimer’s is the ultimate thief — of memories, independence, control, time and, ultimately, life.

For as many people who are living with the disease, there are even more caregivers. Caregiving can be an emotionally, physically and financially draining role. More than 11 million Americans are providing unpaid care for people living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.

This past year has been particularly grave for those impacted by Alzheimer’s. During the COVID-19 pandemic alone, Alzheimer’s and dementia deaths have increased by 16 percent.

Women are at greater risk. Nearly two-thirds of all Americans living with Alzheimer’s are women. In her 60s, a woman’s estimated lifetime risk for developing Alzheimer’s is 1 in 6. For breast cancer it is 1 in 11.

How your fundraising dollars are used

The dollars you raise through The Longest Day help advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. The Association delivers critical services including free support groups and the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900). Through the Helpline, specialists and master’s-level clinicians offer confidential support and information to people living with dementia, caregivers, families and the public. Online services and programs are available at alz.org. Local chapters are located across the country, providing services within each community.

Education programs for the general public feature information on topics such as diagnosis, warning signs, communication, living with Alzheimer’s disease and caregiving techniques.

As the largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer’s research, the Association is committed to advancing vital research toward methods of treatment, prevention and, ultimately, a cure. Currently, the Association is investing more than $235 million in over 650 active best-of-field projects in 39 countries.
