Who was crowned the best? Highlights from the 2019 U SPORTS Cross-Country Championships

The strong winds, cold temperatures, and light layer of snow didn’t discourage the 298 athletes who set foot on the U SPORTS Cross-Country Championship race course this past Saturday afternoon. This action packed race day, at Fort Henry in Kingston, Ontario, included both a women’s eight kilometre and men’s ten kilometre race. It came down to these two races, the culmination of months of tough and gutsy cross-country training, to see who would be crowned the best of U SPORTS for the 2019 XC season.

Below we have put together the results of the top three finishers from both the team and individual sections of the championships.

Women

  1. Lucia Stafford, Toronto Varsity Blues (27:30.3)
  2. Anne-Marie Comeau, Laval Rouge et Or (27:44.2)
  3. Branna MacDougall, Queen’s Gaels (28:01.1)

  1. Queen’s Gaels: 53
  2. Guelph Gryphons: 74
  3. Laval Rouge et Or: 96

Men

  2. Mitchell Ubene, Guelph Gryphons (30:49.3)
  3. Russell Pennock, Calgary Dinos (30:55.2)

Final Team Points

  1. Calgary Dinos: 63
  2. McMaster Marauders: 82
  3. Guelph Gryphons: 82

The tight battle for second was ultimately decided by McMaster’s fifth place runner Evan Ubene’s time of 32:13.1, giving the Marauders the advantage over the Gryphons.
