[Press Release] StreetLib launches author & publisher portals in Finland, Sweden and Malta

Loreto, Italy 31 January 2019.

StreetLib has launched publishing portals for authors and publishers in Finland, Sweden and Malta to digitally distribute their books around the world, with no up-front fees.

Books can be published in English, Finnish, Swedish, Maltese and most other languages, and will be distributed to hundreds of ebook retailers and digital libraries worldwide, including to the world’s biggest ebook retailers like Amazon, Google Play, Kobo and Apple.

Earlier this month StreetLib began its 2019 global roll-out in Africa, at the Golden Jubilee of the Cairo International Book Fair, the world’s biggest literary event, followed by Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Mexico, Spain, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Jamaica and the Bahamas, and now the first three countries in Europe (in addition to home country Italy) round off our roll-out in 21 countries across 6 continents. And that’s just for January.

In February StreetLib will be adding more European nations to the list, and by the years’ end we hope to provide services to authors and publishers across the continent.

StreetLib CEO Giacomo D’Angelo said:

The diverse languages spoken across Europe, from huge countries like Russia to tiny island nations like Malta present considerable challenges for authors and publishers wanting to offer content, and for readers wanting to find that content.

We believe everyone, anywhere on the planet has the right to read books, and we believe every author, anywhere on the planet has the right to be published and reach a global audience.

But, much as we love print (we also offer print on demand options) the production and distribution costs of printed books mean many people around the world — and not least across Europe — face challenges finding the books they want.

It needn’t be that way. In an ideal world a reader in Malta, Finland or Sweden ought to be able to find and read any book in any language, and an author or publisher in Malta, Finland or Sweden should be able to offer books to readers with the same ease as an author or publisher in New York or London.

Today, anyone, anywhere in the world with an internet connection can buy, download and read ebooks on their phones or tablets, no matter how far away their nearest book store is. And authors and publishers, no matter where they are, can upload and sell books to those readers.

The portals are for publishers of all sizes, from individual self-publishers to the biggest publishing houses, facilitating global reach in an international book market worth US$143 billion (EUR 125 billion) (SEK 1.2 trillion).

Giacomo D’Angelo added:

Since its inception in 2006 StreetLib has been at the forefront of the digital reading revolution, enabling authors and publishers around the world to publish and sell books to anyone that has an internet connection.

Today StreetLib distributes a large volume of digital books on behalf of publishers, from individual authors with just one title to big publishers with hundreds or even thousands of titles.

In the US, UK and western Europe digital books — ebooks and audiobooks — provide publishers with new revenue streams alongside their printed book sales. In 2017, according to one report

  • the US (online population 312 million) ebook market, was worth US$3.2 billion (EUR 2.8 billion) (SEK 28.9 billion)
  • the UK (online population 52 million) ebook market was worth US$405 million (EUR 353.8 million) (SEK 3.6 billion)
  • the Canada (online population 33 million) ebook market was worth US$136 million (EUR 118.8 million) (SEK 1.2 billion)
  • the Australia (online population 21 million) ebook market was worth US$126 million (EUR 110 million) (SEK 1.1 billion)
