Breaking Boundaries
In a world where adversity often tests the limits of one’s spirit, there are individuals who defy the odds with their unwavering determination and resilience. Joel, my elder son, is a shining example of perseverance in the face of challenges.
Hebrew 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Despite the hurdles presented by cerebral palsy, Joel’s journey has been one of remarkable progress and resilience. From learning to speak at the age of three and taking his first unsteady steps with the support of his parents at seven, Joel has defied expectations at every turn. Today, he stands as a testament to the power of determination and perseverance.
Not content to be defined by his disability, Joel has worked tirelessly to achieve independence in every aspect of his life. He has honed his communication skills to the point where he is now independent in talking, expressing himself with clarity and confidence.
His once unsteady gait has evolved into a determined stride, allowing him to navigate the world with newfound freedom. And perhaps most impressively, Joel has mastered the skill of driving, using his own car as a means of transportation to go wherever he pleases.
Psalm 23:1–3, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.”
From a young age, Joel faced obstacles due to a disability. However, this did not deter the affection and support showered upon him by his community. His charismatic presence and warm personality endeared him to everyone he met, reminiscent of a respected figure receiving accolades wherever he went.
Despite his disability, Joel pursued his passion for technology and enrolled in IT studies. However, finding relevant employment proved to be a daunting task as numerous companies turned him away. Undeterred, he refused to succumb to despair and instead took on a role as a sales associate in a local big shopping mall to sustain himself.
Many customers at the shopping mall, drawn by his engaging demeanour, would strike up conversations with Joel about potential business investment opportunities. Initially hopeful for a brighter future, Joel placed his trust in these individuals. Unfortunately, nearly every opportunity presented to him turned out to be fraudulent. Once Joel invested his trust and resources, those promising ventures vanished into thin air, leaving him disillusioned and disheartened.
Psalm 23:4, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Joel didn’t stop there. Determined to fulfill his entrepreneurial dreams, he embarked on a journey to save for his own venture in a travel agency. In addition to his full-time job, he seized opportunities to work part-time as a local tour agent, inching closer to his goal with each passing day.
Beyond his commitment to his aspirations, Joel found another way to contribute to his community. Drawing upon his IT expertise, he embarked on fixing computers for those who had faith in his skills, showcasing his resourcefulness and eagerness to enhance his abilities.
Joel’s story is a reminder that adversity is not a barrier but a catalyst for growth. His unwavering resolve in the face of rejection and setbacks serves as an inspiration to all who encounter obstacles on their journey. In a world where success is often measured by one’s ability to overcome challenges, Joel stands tall as a beacon of hope and resilience.
