Impermanence of Life

Reflections Inspired by Seneca’s Teachings

--

We often hear about people fortunate enough to live to 100 years and beyond, and doesn’t it make us want to touch our faces and say, “Wow! That’s a long, long life!”

Contemplating the length of our lives brings us to the wisdom of the ancient philosopher Seneca. In his essay “On the Shortness of Life,” Seneca highlights that it’s not the brevity of life but how we use our time that truly matters. His call to live purposefully and make every moment count remains a timeless lesson. Living with purpose is more than just a choice; it’s a way of life that helps us maximize our time and feel in control of our destiny.

Living with intention means making conscious decisions that align with our values and goals. Whether cherishing moments with those dear to us or pursuing lifelong dreams, these choices empower us, giving us a sense of control over our lives and making each moment impactful. Embracing our passions and nurturing our relationships can ignite a spark within us, helping us feel vibrant and truly alive.

Minimizing distractions — such as excessive social media use and worrying about things beyond our control — allows us to concentrate on what brings us joy and satisfaction, helping us maintain a clear and focused mind.

Ultimately, the quality of our lives is determined by the meaning we find and create in each moment. This introspection is a crucial part of our journey of growth, resonating deeply with the Christian faith’s emphasis on living with intention and in communion with God. Just as Paul’s correspondence with Seneca exemplified a thoughtful exchange of ideas, our daily choices, influenced by the wisdom of past thinkers, can reflect our beliefs and values, enriching our spiritual lives and bringing us closer to our higher purpose.
