Lessons on integrating AI into an enterprise

The long article on Building the AI-Powered Organization in the July 2019 issue is a remarkable piece of work that clearly highlights the topics we have documented earlier (almost a year and a few months back) in two our articles, here and here about lessons in scaling up AI at enterprises.

To scale up AI successfully, companies need to plan for three essential shifts:

1. From siloed work to interdisciplinary collaboration.

2. From experience-based, leader-driven decision making to data-driven decision making at the front line.

3. From rigid and risk-averse to agile, experimental, and adaptable.

While these three points hit it home, we found in our work, that setting up for success needs more than just tactical steps but an agreement on a set of principles that will move the needle for the whole organization. Here is an essential paragraph from the HBR article that resonates well with our PoV and I thought it’s worth saying it as is

“Leaders also often think too narrowly about AI requirements. While cutting-edge technology and talent are certainly needed, it’s equally important to align a company’s culture, structure, and ways of working to support broad AI adoption. But at most businesses that aren’t born digital, traditional mindsets and ways of working run counter to those needed for AI.”
