The String and Key Crew: Hannah Rideout

As part of our ongoing employee spotlight series, we’ll be profiling colleagues who inspire us. Today, meet Hannah Rideout.

Company Role: Product Success Specialist

Most likely to: Get into heaven

Secret talent: Makes the best chocolate chip cookies

Here at String and Key, we understand how important it is to have a dynamic, knowledgeable, and personable customer support team AKA Wysh Granters. Enter Hannah, our resident Product Success Specialist and cake-baking perfectionist. This Raleigh, NC native (and now Durham, NC resident) has jumped around industries — from record label intern to indie music distributor (think Drag City, Kill Rock Stars, Planet Mu, etc.) to crisis center support group program lead. After the nonprofit world, she decided fintech was her next career move. With the help of a friend she landed at S&K in August 2021.

Let’s get to know a little more about Hannah.

What do you do, and what does your typical workday look like?
I work in the Customer Service department and in my role as Product Success Specialist, I’m one of the faces of our life insurance product, Wyshbox. I answer customer questions, collaborate on resolving customer issues, create communication plans, and work with other teams on customer-related projects. Right now, I’m working on an ongoing project where I contact customers and ask for feedback on our pricing and application process.

What’s your favorite part about working at String and Key?
I think my colleagues here are very open to ideas and new ways of doing things. I like being around people who aren’t scared of jumping into the unknown and thrive in a certain level of discomfort. We have a very solid culture and I’m proud of that.

What excites you about your job?
Since we are new to the insurance game, there are a lot of problems to solve and things to figure out. We’re solving the puzzle together in real time. I enjoy all of the investigating, learning, and collaborating I get to do day-to-day.

What do you find most challenging about your role?
Since I’m typically out and about and love being active, it can be hard to sit at a desk and focus! I now try to figure out ways to incorporate physical activity into my daily office routine. I love to go for a lunch walk or run.

What are the values that drive you?
Authenticity, curiosity, and self-actualization. It’s very important for me to seek out genuine experiences and just to be generally out in the world. I am curious about everything and I like engaging with people who are deep into their hobbies and interests. I think self-actualization is a result of living an authentic and curious life.

How do you stay on top of your game?
By petting my Shetland Sheepdog, Wally, every day.

What drew you to tech and what excites you about the industry?
There’s a lot of knowledge to gain and endless paths to take in this relatively new world. The industry is growing rapidly and with rapid growth there are so many opportunities to create important and good products. This is a world I didn’t know much about before I jumped in, but it’s been exciting to learn and work at this pace.

If you could swap places with anyone at String and Key, who would it be and why?
I’d swap places with Tevan, our Program Manager of Operations because he is calm, cool, and collected while staying on top of everything. I admire his communication skills. Project management at a small to mid-size start-up seems both challenging and rewarding.

What’s one thing — either industry-related or not — that you’ve learned in the last month?
I learned the word “somnambulant’’ from reading a webpage describing the band Codeine. It means “resembling or the characteristic of a sleepwalker; sluggish”.

What unexpected subject could you give a one-hour presentation on with no advance prep?
Twin Peaks (the TV show, not the chain restaurant!). Like many others, I believe Twin Peaks Season three, Part eight is the greatest television episode of all time. Go check it out if you haven’t seen it. Also, check out Wild at Heart and Straight Story while you’re at it.

What keeps you busy outside of work?
My sheltie, Wally, hiking, biking, general exercise, watching good movies, engaging with music in different ways, cooking and baking, daydreaming, finding clothes, and figuring out where my next trip will be.

Can you list five hashtags that describe your personality?
I’m not online :)

Lighting Round:

Have a country home or a city condo?
Country home.

90’s hip-hop or 2000’s pop?
90’s hip hop.
