The String and Key Crew: Maahi Chowdhury

As part of our ongoing employee spotlight series, we’ll be profiling colleagues who inspire us. Today, meet Maahi Chowdhury.

Company Role: Senior Financial Analyst

Most likely to: Bring up my dairy allergy five minutes into introducing myself

Secret talent: I can spin anything on my finger

You can call String and Key a few things: an R&D studio, a creative haven, a place that has free snacks. Another thing you can call us is a fintech company and, as a result, financial expertise is highly important. Luckily, we have one such expert, Maahi, our Senior Financial Analyst. This Sunnyside, Queens native had childhood dreams of being a pet shop owner or a zoologist but his path wouldn’t take him towards that goal. Instead, he found himself working in the financial sector in anything from financial integration for M&A (mergers & acquisitions), to SOC (System and Organization Controls) audits, to other wide arrays of functions in finance early in his career. He was then recruited to work for S&K in November 2021.

Let’s get to know a little more about Maahi.

What do you do, and what does your typical workday look like?
My typical workday changes every week. String and Key is so focused on improving and creating efficiencies that I find myself in the deep-end trying to help accomplish those tasks. Even when performing a standard month-end close, I’m encouraged to always find a better way to do things. Every month feels a little different than the last.

What’s your favorite part about working at String and Key?
Honestly, my favorite part is how well documented everything is and how every function cares so much about being organized, which makes life so much easier. I have a startup background so I know how messy data can make our jobs a lot more difficult to manage. We’re a company that is prepared and growing, so that’s always exciting to see. The people are pretty great too, but I think that goes without saying at this point.

What excites you about your job?
When I joined the company, I asked Susan, our Head of Finance, to involve me as much as possible with the budget and FP&A (financial planning and analysis). Nine months later, I’m running those functions, which, at this stage of my career, I am so thrilled to be able to do and to be able to learn from a professional like Susan. It’s incredible.

What do you find most challenging about your role?
How fluid it can be at times. Par for the course in the tech start up world. You must be prepared to wear a lot of different hats and wear them well. Luckily, I’m fashionable.

What are the values that drive you?
Integrity centers me, curiosity drives me, and a sense of humor keeps me sane.

How do you stay on top of your game?
I like reading or listening to podcasts. Staying informed and learning inspires me to do better at my own craft. I also find that different perspectives can help me introduce new ways of thinking, which is always fun.

What drew you to tech and what excites you about the industry?
There’s so much opportunity in tech, so much to do, and so much to accomplish. Things move so much faster in this industry than in others, so it can feel a little unreal how much one company can do even in a year’s time.

If you could swap places with anyone at String and Key, who would it be and why?
I think the obvious answer is Susan, our Head of Finance, because she’s an excellent career role model. However, a less obvious answer is swapping places with Alex Tull, our Head of People. I feel as though I’ve never worked as closely with People Operations/H.R. until holding this position and I have definitely learned a lot from our meetings and interactions.

What’s one thing — either industry-related or not — that you’ve learned in the last month?
I love cooking! I recently learned how to make Shakshuka, a dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, olive oil, peppers, onion and garlic.

What unexpected subject could you give a one-hour presentation on with no advance prep?
Probably something about statistics because I’m passionate about how data influences the economy and our day-to-day lives. I used to be a T.A. for econometrics at my college, so I’m always willing to learn and chat about statistics.

What keeps you busy outside of work?
I love going out, trying new restaurants, and playing board games with my friends. I also spend a lot of time with my boyfriend which, as of late, means I’m spending more time at home and cooking more, which I am not mad at, and neither is he.

Can you list five hashtags that describe your personality?
#Driven #Curious #Playful #Quick #Witty

90’s hip-hop or 2000’s pop?
