Dietary supplements are one of the modern wonders of the world. Not only can they largely fill in the nutritional gaps created by a poor diet, but certain ones can also boost brain activity, improve your mood, help you sleep better, and more. Given those benefits, it’s little wonder that the global market for dietary supplements is expected to reach approximately $195 billion by 2025. As big of a number as that is, it is less surprising when you note that almost 70% of adults in America take supplements.

Of those, the Council for Responsible Nutrition reports that 25% cite heart health as their reason for taking supplements. This is another statistic that makes plenty of sense, considering that 1 out of every 4 deaths in America is attributable to heart disease. This is, of course, quite sad, and is the reason that so many billions of dollars are spent on research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular problems.

We all look forward to a day when heart disease becomes less of a devastating diagnosis, but in the meantime, there is plenty of personal responsibility we can take toward better heart health. Just consider these four simple, affordable supplements that are known to improve heart function:

Magnesium

Every cell in the human body needs magnesium and greatly suffers without it. It helps keep your nerves alert, and your muscles and bones strong. It plays a significant role in metabolic health, energy production, mood stability, and even healthy sleep, in addition to cardiovascular function. Without healthy levels of this nutrient, the body is at risk of many chronic illnesses.

Cinnamon

That’s right, this basic baking ingredient has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease. Specifically, supplementing with cinnamon is known to reduce total cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. It’s also loaded with antioxidants, which help to protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. The best part about cinnamon as a supplement is that it’s probably already in your kitchen.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

A diet high in Omega-3 fatty acids supports a healthy, functioning body in many ways, including several heart-specific benefits. Supplementing with fish oil, for instance, which is high in this nutrient, can reduce triglycerides, total cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood clotting. All of these effects lead to a stronger, more efficient cardiovascular system. Omega-3 supplements can also reduce joint pain, inflammation, and even lower risk of depression.

Folic acid

Folic acid is a synthesized version of vitamin B9 and is another key supplement for maintaining maximum heart health. Having enough of this nutrient in the body helps to reduce the risk of blood clots, and research indicates that a daily dose of the supplement could lower the risk of heart disease and stroke by as much as 20 percent.

Supplementing the truth

While the nutrients listed above can be found in many foods consumed across the globe, a supplement can be very useful in making sure that your body retains an optimal amount, regardless of your diet. One thing to note about all supplements (not only those listed above) is that they are often sold in different types and dosages, so it is recommended that before you begin taking a new supplement, you speak with a doctor or other healthcare provider who can help ensure you find the right product for your body and nutritional profile.

In addition, it shouldn’t be assumed that supplements are the key to good health. In fact, they are most valuable when added to a foundation that consists of a healthy diet, proper exercise, and plenty of sleep and hydration.
