If you noticed that you haven’t been able to access the AI detector app on Open AI, the folks behind ChatGPT, for a few days, you may be interested to find out it’s not an error. It’s gone.

Open AI admitted what many of us have been talking about for some time. These AI detectors are seriously flawed. They generate significant false positives and fail to detect obvious use of AI. Some of the more popular ones on the market today are products offered by companies that also offer Generative AI tools as writing aids. Conflict?

Many question the accuracy of any of the AI detectors currently in use.

This note was added to an Open Ai post originally from January 31, 2023:

“As of July 20, 2023, the AI classifier is no longer available due to its low rate of accuracy. We are working to incorporate feedback and are currently researching more effective provenance techniques for text. We have committed to developing and deploying mechanisms that enable users to understand if audio or visual content is AI-generated.”

The company does say it’s working to develop a more accurate model. We’ll see.
