What is Web Summit?

Well, in a nutshell, it’s something that started as a “simple idea” in 2010 — to connect people in the tech community — evolved into THE biggest technology conference in the world.

Or, as Web Summit co-founder Paddy Cosgrove puts it,

“World’s largest gathering of entrepreneurs.”

But the people behind Web Summit know that size isn’t the only thing that matters, and that’s why they pride themselves on organizing “the BEST technology conference on the planet.”

They have, after all, welcomed with open arms the likes of Uber and Stripe and other celebrated unicorns when these mighty companies were just early-stage startups.

StoryChief is psyched to be among this year’s group of welcomed startups in Lisbon, Portugal, for Web Summit 2018!

Web Summit: The best technology conference on the planet

But how? And why?

In addition to their speaker lineup of the biggest names in tech, they’ve committed themselves this year to 9 out of the following 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (“UN SDGs”) for Web Summit 2018. :

That’s right. The largest tech conference in the world, bringing together the world’s thought leaders of the latest and greatest innovations is leading the way with responsible conferencing.

Bravo.

Let’s highlight a few, shall we?

UN SDG 2: Zero Hunger

It’s about time somebody thought about the loads of food that just gets tossed in the trash when all is said and done.

“End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.”

Through a partnership with Zero Desperdicio, all excess food from the event will be given to those in need across the city of Lisbon.

UN SDG 5: Gender Equality

Talking the talk about the elephant in the room!

“Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.”

Web Summit 2018 is also walking the walk by optimizing the “women in tech” experience with the introduction of the women in tech lounge, mentor sessions, and roundtables. 👩🏻‍💻

UN SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

Because diversity is bigger than gender, and far deeper than race or age, Web Summit 2018 is going above and beyond the call of duty this year.

“Reduce inequality within and among countries.”

In partnership with Crescer.org there will be 12 refugees in attendance at the conference, fully prepped and eager to actively participate in the 3-day event.

UN SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

In partnership with Mirpuri Foundation, Web Summit will be joining the movement to “Turn the Tide on Plastic” by distributing 30,000 reusable bottles to attendees.

“Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.”

Furthermore, the event will utilize biodegradable-only cutlery and foodware, not to mention that all IKEA furniture used at the conference is repurposable, reusable or recycled. 👏👏👏

UN SDG 13: Climate Action

Green will be the color of the scene this year in more ways than one this year as Web Summit 2018 partners with Ecosia.org. Together, they will plant one tree for each attendee, that’s 70,000 trees, across the city of Lisbon.

“Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.”

The trees will be planted strategically around the local ecosystem, ensuring that the conference achieves total carbon neutrality.

That means that every attendee this year can be rest assured that they’ve done something for this planet, by just being in Lisbon for the conference.

This includes our very own StoryChief sloths, who are right now on the ground in Lisbon.

Sloths are highly sustainable animals!

We hope to meet you at our stand.
