How did you break into a career in tech sales?

I broke into my career in tech sales after working in both hospitality and digital marketing — I started to browse for career opportunities in SaaS (software as a service) on Linkedin and was approached by a recruiter from a startup Stella Connect for a Sales Development opportunity.

What has been your biggest challenge in your sales career?

The biggest challenge in my sales career is also the same thing that has helped me in my career the most. When you work for a startup you naturally have to wear many hats, this can be extremely difficult when you have a “day job” but also gives you the opportunity to work with different departments and learn about different roles — this helped me figure out the next steps in my career and also made me more diverse professionally.

What is it that most excites you about sales?

What excites me the most about sales is that no day is the same for the most part — you have the opportunity to talk to different people and really use critical thinking skills to best understand a prospects needs in order to sell to them.

What excites me the most about being in management is the feeling when I see the professional growth of an individual — nothing makes me happier and more excited then when an SDR gets promoted.

If you had to share, “words of wisdom,” with a new Sales Rep who’s about to start their career, what would they be?

If I had to share some “words of wisdom” I would say two things. The first is to set goals for yourself — I would say it is crucial to network with others within a company and set career goals for yourself once you know what it is you are interested in pursuing — short term vs. long term.

In my example when I was an SDR — a short term goal for me was to be promoted into a team lead and a long term goal was to become an SDR manager.

This really helps give you a sense of purpose at work when things feel rough and something for you to work towards on a day to day basis.

The second piece of wisdom that I would give is to take an interest in the industry that you are in — learn who the thought leaders are in the space, buzz words, common pain points, and be a part of the community. Becoming a thought leader yourself in both sales and the industry is also an amazing way to stand out to your prospects and build trust while selling to them.
