I had the pleasure of interviewing Garrette Backie, who was born in Detroit and grew up with grit and a strong drive for success, instilled in him by his entrepreneur father. His mother also played a significant role in his upbringing, imparting a love and passion for people. Garrette relocated to Chicago and applied his knowledge of auto manufacturing to work in the information technology field in support of the Department of Defense. After 10 years of supporting the government sector, Garrette decided to branch out on his own and founded a VAR Tech Company based on his vision and ideals. Today, that vision has grown into Clutch Solutions, which combines top talent, partners, and products to offer customer-centric, turnkey technology solutions for businesses and government. With an engineering-first culture and a commitment to strong relationships, their account managers deliver exceptional service and cutting-edge IT solutions globally. Clutch Solutions is based in Scottsdale, Arizona, where Garrette now resides.

What motivated you to launch your startup?

I realized that there was a need for a successful VAR (Value Added Reseller) to work closely with Sales Representatives. It was this realization that led me to take the initiative and start my own company. I strongly believe that our VAR can provide the necessary support to Sales Representatives, ultimately benefiting the industry as a whole.

What is it that excites you about what you’re building?

We are not only creating millionaires but also paving the way for the next generation of customer relations. Our vision is to provide a path for future generations to follow and achieve success.

What has been your biggest challenge when growing your startup?

We are facing unprecedented challenges in these times, with a global pandemic that was one of the worst in history and significant supply chain disruptions. Furthermore, technology is evolving at an incredible pace that can be difficult to keep up with. As a new company, we are navigating these challenges while seeking financial and product partners, obtaining certifications, acquiring customers, and building a team of dedicated employees. These are all considerable accomplishments to achieve within our first five years in operation.

What are your future plans for your startup?

Our goal is to establish ourselves as a brand that is recognized not only for providing solutions to our clients but also for our employees. We envision creating an environment that fosters growth and development for everyone involved. This is an integral part of our strategy, and we are committed to achieving this goal.

If you had to share “words of wisdom” with a Founder who’s about to start their own startup, what would they be?

It is crucial to remain vigilant and prepared to adapt to real-life events that may change the course of business. A willingness to pivot and having a team that trusts your vision is essential for not only improving the business but also enhancing the lives of those involved. Mindful growth, rather than hypergrowth, can help build a stronger foundation to weather any financial storms. Remember, it is our collective responsibility to promote sustainable growth and development.
