The Grossmont Union High School Collective is a group of students from the Grossmont Union High School District in San Diego, California that works to make sure all student voices are heard and properly represented throughout the district. The Grossmont Union High School District is made up of eleven high schools that are spread throughout the eastern region of San Diego county.

In September, we featured the work of the students with the Grossmont Union Student Collective and engaged in an in-depth conversation with their student-run executive board about the importance of student engagement in their school.

“Change Begins Through the Passion of Individuals”

Recently, we followed up with James F., the Director of External Relations for the Grossmont Union High School Collective to see what type of progress they have been making as they continue to build a successful student run organization.

When asked about the progress that they have made in general, James explained that they have expanded their team to now “include a total of 20 team members.” In addition, James explained that they “have also added a specific position for student relations, that is focused on anti bullying and student safety.”

Students of the GUSC Meeting

When asked about the projects that they have been working on, James was quick to tease a new “student satisfaction survey in circulation that is designed to help improve upon academic concerns.”

In a time that has been spent recruiting students and in long meetings with school administrators, the executive members of the Grossmont Union High School Collective have large plans for rolling out a plan for the spring 2017 semester that they can roll out district-wide.

The reason we have chosen to revisit the students of the GUSC in this month’s organization feature is because of their groundbreaking progress that they have made in a relatively short amount of time. In a time where many students are unsure about what the future may hold for our country, and education itself, it is important to recognize the work that many are doing to make sure that there is a space for students to safely, and effectively, use their voice. The GUSC is working to do just that and is an example to every school in the United States. It is clear that in a short amount of time, a small group of motivated students can make a large impact in their schools.

At Student Voice, we want to be a resource to organizations like the GUSC. As an organization, we aim to address student disenfranchisement in the education system by amplifying student voices, building a community of these student voices, and supporting these student voices’ action, in turn promoting students as partners in their education rather than passive consumers. Join us and the students of the GUSC as we continue to highlight and recognize the important work that they are doing everyday.
